This course is ideal for Head Teachers, Governors, Local Education Authority Officers and Solicitors involved in any aspect of taking disciplinary action against pupils and subsequent appeals.

The course is particularly important given the new requirements for Appeal Panel members to receive training.

  • Are your Head Teachers and Governors fully aware of their statutory duties with regard to Policies and Exclusions?
  • Are the Clerks of Governing bodies trained and aware of their role and responsibilities?
  • Be sure you have got your procedures right and avoid the £000 costs
  • Are LEA officers fully aware of their role and what the courts have said about this?

The course will cover the following including reference to the latest Guidance and High Court decisions:

  • School disciplinary policies
  • Making the policy and keeping people informed
  • Who can exclude?
  • For how long?
  • When? When not?
  • Disability Discrimination and Exclusions
  • Parents rights regarding disciplinary action taken against their child
  • The Discipline Committee
  • Proceedings before the Discipline Committee
  • Appeals to the independent Appeal Panel
  • What do they have to decide?
  • Evidence – statements/hearsay
  • Pearls of wisdom from the High Court
  • Odds and sods from the Ombudsman
