How to avoid the legal pitfalls
How to avoid a Judicial Review
How to avoid heavy legal costs
How to get the procedures right

A Council can easily incur very large legal costs on a Judicial Review. Avoid this by ensuring the Council and Panel members get the procedures right.

This course is particularly important given the new requirements for Appeal Panel members to receive training (both before they can sit and regular updates).

This training is ideal for Education Officers, Solicitors, Appeal Panel Members, Clerks to Appeals Panels and anyone else involved in any of the aspects of School Admissions.

The course will cover the latest Codes of Practice on School Admissions and School Admission Appeals, including the Guidance on Infant Class Size Appeals.

  • Are your officers, Panel Members, aware of the latest schools admissions Code and admissions appeals Code?
  • Do they understand the process of schools admissions both for primary and secondary?
  • Are they aware of what the Courts have said about Infant Class Size Appeals, the power of Panels and what they can take into account?
  • When were your Panel Members last trained?
  • Be sure you have got your procedures right and avoid the costs

The course will cover:

  • Admissions Criteria – lawful or not?
  • When can a parent appeal?
  • How is an Appeal started?
  • Infant Class sizes
  • Independent Appeal Panels
  • Two stage hearing - or is it?
  • Multiple Appeals
  • Fresh evidence – fresh hearing
  • How equality law affects admissions
  • Reasons for decisions
  • What the High Court has said
  • Odds and sods from the Ombudsman

" A truly excellent course which dealt with school admission in a through and comprehensive manner "

Roger Bishton, Wiltshire County Council
