Renewing Local Democracy - Update On Current Legislation
Alternative date:
19th October 2010 - London
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007 and the Local Democracy, Economic Regeneration and Construction Act 2009 make major changes to the local government governance landscape, introducing ultra-strong Leaders, re-inventing Scrutiny as an outward-facing partnership vehicle centred on Total Place, statutory petition schemes, new electoral arrangements, enabling the creation of new Parish Councils, and creating a plethora of new sub-regional bodies.
By June, we should have a clear view of the intentions of a new Government, derived from party manifestos and a new legislative programme.
So this seminar is aimed to collect as much of this as possible and to give local authority lawyers, democratic services officers and policy staff a clear view of the governance agenda and the challenges which they face. Peter Keith-Lucas is acknowledged not just as an expert on local authority governance but as a commentator, not afraid to express his personal views on the practical merits of new and proposed legislation.
