Witness Training for Enforcement Officers
This course is intended for those intending to give evidence in the magistrates court in connection with Local Authority Prosecutions
Most officers will feel at least a little apprehensive about giving evidence in court. The perception is that this often arises from the uncertainty over what is expected and a lack of knowledge of the sort of questions that will be asked. The reality is that a little basic training on preparation and a greater understanding of the court process often leads to greater confidence and better performance in court.
Preparation is regarded as the key element of the course. Whilst a badly prepared witness statement is likely to lead to unwelcome challenges at court, a well prepared statement will lead to greater certainty as to what is expected and a more polished performance. Statement taking is therefore a significant part of the course. The preparation aspect will also include preparation for court.
Other key aspects of the course include:
- Court Structure and procedure
- Basic rules of evidence
- Formalities
- Giving evidence
- Cross examination
- Etiquette
- Difficult questions
- Use of notebooks
